Maia has been with Cuming & Gillespie since 2012, having completed her articles with the firm and then continued with us as an Associate.
Since being admitted, Maia’s practice has focused exclusively on personal injury and medical malpractice work, in relation to which she (like the rest of our firm) represents only Plaintiffs.
Maia’s involvement in medical malpractice work has grown significantly, as has her passion for advocating for our clients who have suffered catastrophic injury as a result of negligent medical care. Maia recognizes the vulnerable situation these individuals and their families are left in and the necessity of ensuring that they have people on their side committed to obtaining reasonable compensation for what they have been through and for the impact their injuries are expected to continue to have on them.
Since becoming an Associate, Maia has been involved in running no less than 20 medical malpractice claims and has played a key role in the successful resolution of a number of those claims. In her overall practice, Maia has advocated for clients in front of the Provincial Court of Alberta, Provincial Court of Saskatchewan and Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, as well as in numerous mediation and judicial dispute resolution settings.
In addition to her practice, Maia sits on the board of the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association and is on the Executive for the Canadian Bar Association – Health Law south section. She is also a member of the Canadian Bar Association, personal injury section, the Calgary Bar Association, the Association of Women Lawyers and is a member of the Planning Committee for the 2017 ACTLA Women’s Legal Forum.
Maia received her Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Calgary in 2008 and her Juris Doctorate (with distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan in 2012.
